FAQ

A rotary step attenuator is a manual RF attenuator that reduces signal power in precise, repeatable increments using a rotary switch mechanism. It is commonly used in RF test systems, microwave measurement setups, radar, satellite communications, and wireless infrastructure applications.
A rotary step attenuator provides discrete attenuation values such as 0–10 dB, 0–60 dB, or 0–99 dB with defined step sizes, typically 1 dB. A continuously variable attenuator allows smooth adjustment without fixed steps. Step attenuators are preferred when precise, repeatable settings are required.
YUSNTECH rotary step attenuators cover broadband RF and microwave frequencies from DC up to 26.5 GHz, making them suitable for low-frequency RF applications as well as high-frequency microwave systems.
Common attenuation ranges include 0–10 dB, 0–60 dB, 0–99 dB, and 0–129 dB, depending on the model and application requirements.
Standard step sizes include 0.1 dB, 1 dB, 10 dB increments, with some models offering larger step values or combined attenuation schemes for wider dynamic range.
Available connector options include SMA, N-type, and 3.5 mm connectors, allowing compatibility with a wide range of RF and microwave equipment.
Depending on the model, power handling ranges from 2 W up to 25 W average power, making these attenuators suitable for both laboratory and higher-power RF applications.
Yes. Models equipped with 3.5 mm connectors support operation up to 26.5 GHz, which is commonly used in microwave testing and communication systems.
Typical applications include RF test and measurement, signal simulation, calibration, receiver protection, EMC/EMI testing, radar systems, satellite communications, and laboratory research.
Attenuation accuracy depends on frequency and attenuation value. Lower attenuation settings generally provide tighter accuracy, while higher attenuation settings may have slightly larger tolerances.
VSWR (Voltage Standing Wave Ratio) indicates impedance matching quality. Lower VSWR means better matching and reduced signal reflections. Rotary step attenuators are designed to maintain good VSWR performance across their operating frequency range.
Yes. By reducing input signal power, a rotary step attenuator can help protect sensitive RF receivers and measurement instruments from excessive signal levels.
Yes. The mechanical rotary switch design provides repeatable attenuation settings, which is one of the key advantages of step attenuators compared with continuously variable designs.
These attenuators are widely used in telecommunications, aerospace, defense, satellite communications, radar, wireless infrastructure, research laboratories, and RF manufacturing environments.
Consider the required frequency range, attenuation range, step size, power handling, connector type, and environmental conditions. For example, a DC–26.5 GHz, 0–99 dB, 1 dB step attenuator with 3.5 mm connectors is well suited for broadband microwave testing.
Yes. Custom configurations are available for many applications, including different attenuation ranges, connector types, and power ratings to meet specific RF system requirements.
Typical operating temperature is 0°C to +54°C, suitable for most indoor laboratory and equipment-room environments.
A high-power rotary step attenuator can handle greater RF energy without overheating, making it suitable for transmitter testing, power amplifier evaluation, and other applications involving elevated signal levels.
